A. Complete an approved GNA course;
B. Obtain CNA certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing;
C. Apply to MDGNATS for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant Examination;
D. Results of the examination will be forwarded to the Board and MDGNATS will notify the candidate of the results;
E. For those passing the examination, the Board will indicate on the database that the individual is certified as a GNA, which will appear on online and telephone verification.
Note: No new certificate will be issued. GNA certification will appear on the CNA certificate at the next renewal.
F. Renewal
1. GNA shall obtain verification from employer of the required 8 hours of work as a GNA in a comprehensive care facility on the form and in the manner required by the Board;
2. Complete CNA renewal form;
3. Once processed, the CNA certificate with the GNA certification designation will be mailed.
NOTE: CNAs who are eligible for certification as home health aides or medicine aides will also have the appropriate designation on their certificate once their applications have been processed by the Board.
4. If GNA or other certifications cannot be verified during processing, the individual will not receive these designations on the CNA certificate.
The Board is working on a private web site that will allow employers to verify that a GNA meets the 8 hours of active practice in a comprehensive care setting as required by Federal law.
